5 Rules To Keep In Mind When Wearing A Tie

Wearing ties can be tricky business, be it the length, the knot, the style — one wrong move with this tiny accessory and it can crush your look in a minute. And so to help you with this dilemma, we bring you 5 tips to bear in mind when ‘tying the knot’. Take notes…

1. Look at the tip of your tie…

Not 2 inches below, not 2 inches above – the tip of your tie should just about brush the top of your belt line. You don’t want it to look like it has shrunk or is trying to reach the ground.

2. Knot it right…

Your tie’s knot should be big enough to cover the collar band and top button behind it – if it doesn’t, the knot has probably been tied too loose. You might want to consider re-doing it in such a case.

3. Check the width of your knot…

How big is too big and how small is too small? Two and a quarter inches at its widest points, is just about right.

4. Don’t let your tie shout out…

While a tie is a small detail that can enhance your look, you want to be sure that it doesn’t ask for too much attention at the same time. Let it complement, rather than stand out. Go for one that is in a similar colour palette as your shirt and is not too print heavy. Solids are the safest bet.

5. Ace that four-in-hand knot…

It’s the easiest, safest way to go about enhancing your collar. Nor too big, nor too small, nor too triangular or too stunted, this must be your go-to if you’re not well-equipped with other knotting styles. It looks natural, and can be worn with all kinds of collars – from a club to a Madmen. Practice this one until you can do it with closed eyes — you’ll thank us later.
