Different Types Of Tie Knots

  • Four In Hand Knot - 
Four In Hand is one of the classic tie knot styles and also one of the simplest.
  1. Place the tie around your neck with the broader end on your left side, around 3 inches lower than the tapered end.
  2. Move the broader end over and around the tapered end of the tie, wrapping it from right to left horizontally. 
  3. Pass the broad end right over the knot formed by the right to left motion, and put your index finger on the horizontal band. 
  4. Take the broad end of your tie up and under the loop around your neck.
  5. Then slide the broad end of your tie through the loop opened by your index finger.
  6. Pull the broad end down with one hand and tighten the knot with the other.
  7. Finally, pull the narrow end down while simultaneously pulling up the knot to secure the tie with suitable tightness.

  1. Begin with the broad end on the right and tapered end slightly above the belly button. Then cross the broad end over the tapered end.
  2. Wrap the broad end around the tapered end and pull it up and through the loop around your neck between your collars. 
  3. After that, pull the broad end back down, over the loop. 
  4. Wrap the broad end around and under the tapered end. The back of the broader end should be visible. 
  5. Take the broad end up and over the loop between your neck and tie. 
  6. Pull it back down and tauten the knot. Then wrap the broader end over the tapered end. 
  7. After that, pull the broader end up through the loop around your neck and put your index finger on the knot.
  8. Then, slide the broader end through the space between the finger and the knot.
  9. Pull the broad end down with one hand while simultaneously pulling the knot up to tighten it with the other.
  • Half Windsor Knot

Prince Albert Knot is one of the fanciest tie styles. Here is how to make this tie knot step by step :

  1. Place the tie around your neck, with the broader end hanging around 13 inches lower than the tapered end.
  2. Gently wrap the broader end over and around the tapered end. 
  3. Repeat the second step while holding the knot gently. 
  4. Hold the two loops and pull the broader end up and under the space between collar and the tie.
  5. Slide the tie in the space between your fingers (holding the two loops) and the knot. 
  6. Pull the broad end down with one hand while simultaneously pulling the knot up to tighten it with the other.
  • Van Wijk Knot

The Van Wijk knot is an adaptation of the Prince Albert knot conceived by an artist named Lisa Van Wijk. Here are the steps on how to make a tie knot with three loops.

  1. Place the broader end on the right side, with the tapered end slightly above the belly button. 
  2. Cross the broader end over and wrap it around the tapered end. You should be able to see the back of the tie. 
  3. Repeat the above step while setting the knot a bit loose.
  4. Wrap the broader end of the tie over and around the tapered end again and then cross it under the space between your neck and the tie.
  5. Pull the three loops out and slide the tie in the space between the loops and the knot.
  6. Pull the broad end down with one hand while simultaneously pulling the knot up to tighten it with the other.
  • Cafe Knot

Although it is quite an intricate knot to tie, it is one of the best-looking tie styles. Here's how to tie this tie knot :

  1. Place the tie around your neck with the broad end on the right, hanging a few inches lower than the position you want for your finished tie.
  2. Take the tapered end over and around the broad end and pull it up and under the loop around your neck. 
  3. Pull the tapered end down on the other side and wrap it under the broad end. 
  4. Take the tapered end from behind the knot and cross it over in the front. 
  5. Put the tapered end through the loop around your neck from behind the knot.
  6. Wrap the tapered end behind the broad end and put it through the loop in front of the knot in a way that you see the back of the tapered end.
  7. Hold the broad end up so you see the back of the knot and slide the tapered end through the loop on the back.
  8. Pull the tapered end to tighten it and then bring both ends down.
  9. Now, pull the broad end down with one hand while simultaneously pulling the knot up to tighten it with the other.

Out of the several different tie knots, this might be the more complex one but when executed correctly, it would take up your style game to the next level. 

  • Pratt Knot

The Pratt Knot has been around for a century and can be worn both casually and formally. Here’s how to tie the Pratt knot :

  1. Place your tie around your neck with its back facing the front and the broader end slightly above the belly button.
  2. Put the tapered end on top of the broader end. 
  3. Now, pull the broader end through the loop around your neck in front of the knot.
  4. Then, put your index finger on the knot and wrap the broader end over and around the tapered end.
  5. Cross the broader end through the loop around your neck from behind the knot.
  6. Now slide the broader end through the space between your finger and the knot.
  7. Pull the broad end down with one hand while simultaneously pulling the knot up to tighten it with the other.
